Abstract

This essay addresses both US national  and state policies affecting a sample of five states where the author went to school, lived, and taught. These states have passed laws against teaching about race, class, sexuality, ethnicity, and gender, not in response to federal mandates, but on their own. This essay provides context for threats to racial equity in education and personal reflections on how these would have affected her education and work.
